WorkFirst
WorkFirst is Washington State’s program to assist recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to meet their goals and provide well-being for their family. WorkFirst is a collaborative effort with families, WorkFirst case managers, and local community and partner agencies to build a stable foundation for employment, provide employment and training opportunities, and ultimately serve as a gateway to financial independence.
Building on innovative workforce service initiatives, the Employment Security Department’s Career Scope job search program is designed to empower TANF recipients in overcoming employment barriers and achieving sustainable success at more than thirty locations across the state.
WorkFirst delivers targeted support for individuals facing multiple employment challenges, including:
- Individualized Case Management – tailored weekly support to help participants navigate resources and overcome work-related challenges.
- Job Placement and Search Assistance – integrated guidance offering actionable labor market insights, resume and cover letter support, interview coaching, and job retention strategies.
- Strategies for Success – an immersive six-module workshop series that equips participants with essential life and soft skills across work readiness, effective communication, personal wellness, strength building, career development, and community engagement.
- Financial Capabilities – Needs description
- Supportive Services –assistance with basic needs like transportation assistance, work or interview clothing, personal hygiene, and other job-related supports to help participants gain and maintain new employment.
Eligibility:
- Participants must be 18 years or older.
- Participants must currently be receiving TANF benefits.
- Ability to participate for a minimum of:
- 20 hours per week for single parent households with children under the age of 6.
- 32-38 hours per week for two parent households.
