The Washington Service Corps (WSC) is an AmeriCorps affiliate program designed to help service organizations all over the state meet critical unmet community needs and develop a talent pipeline of individuals ready for the workforce through serving their communities.
WSC partners with over 300 nonprofit organizations, local city/county agencies, and faith based organizations, schools and early learning centers to address the needs of our communities. As an intermediary, this unit can supply over 700 AmeriCorps members who volunteer full-time to serve their neighbors in need. WSC members contribute their passion, commitment, hard work and skills to projects that include environmental stewardship, workforce development, nutrition education, assistance to veterans, organizational sustainability and tutoring to preschool children and students in grades K-4.
WSC is comprised of individual placements and team-based service sites; the Washington Reading Corps, a subsidiary program of WSC, is based in schools and is sponsored in partnership with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). In addition to the unit’s primary function of meeting community needs, WSC also works to create a service to work pipeline for non-profit and government agencies. WSC AmeriCorps members gain valuable work experience while serving which enables them to find work after their year of service.
Funding for this unit is provided mainly through federal grants and program fee transactions from partner program sites.
