How do I scan a printed resume for upload to WorkSourceWA.com?

This article describes how to convert a printed resume (typically brought into a WorkSource Center by a customer) into a format that can be uploaded to WorkSourceWA.com.
Requirements: Scanner, Microsoft Word

  1. Scan the resume using a dedicated scanner or a multi-function printer/copier/fax/scanner
  2. Scan the document as a PDF, .doc, or .docx file
  3. Send the scanned resume to your work email address
  4. Save the scanned resume to your computerImage: download the resume to a folder you can easily access
  5. Open Microsoft WordYou can open Word directly from the start menu by clicking the start button or typing the Windows key on your computer and typing 'Word' into the search box
  6. Open the PDF in Microsoft Word
    1. Method I: Open the resume directly in Microsoft Word
    2. Click File in Microsoft WordFile is in the upper left-hand corner next to the Home tab on the Microsoft Office ribbon
    3. Click Open on the left navigation>Click the resume>Click Open at the bottomSelect Open from the fly-out, select the document, then click 'Open'
    4. Method II: Drag the downloaded resume on top of the Microsoft Word appDrag the scanned resume from the folder it is in to any place on top of the Word application
    5. It may make sense to put these two windows next to each other for this purpose
    6. Method III: Right-Click the resumes and use "Open With"Right click with your mouse on the resume, select 'Open With', and select 'Word'
    7. **If "Word" does not appear in this list, you may click "Choose another app" and manually locate Microsoft Word. 
    8. If you really want to do this and you are having difficulty, please reach out to your local IT support for assistance in locating your computer's copy of Word.
  7. Click Enable Editing in the top PROTECTED VIEW banner
  8. Click 'Enable Editing' in the Protected View banner that appears at the very top of Microsoft Word
  9. Type CTRL+A to select all text in the resumeThe Control key is located in the lower left hand corner of the keyboard. The 'A' key is directly to the right of the Caps Lock key.
  10. On the Home Tab, click the Text Font drop-down arrow and select an appropriate font faceSelect a friendly and professional font such as Calibri or Arial
  11. On the Home Tab, click the Text Size drop-down and select an appropriate font size
  12. Apply headings, correct OCR* typos, and proof the resume for quality and clarity*OCR (Optical Character Recognition) typos are common when scanning documents, as the software engine attempts to interpret letters and words.
  13. For example, "clamshells" may be easily mis-interpreted by this type of software as "clarnshells" depending on the font face used, the quality of the scan, and the OCR software itself.
  14. Save the document as a revised resume and use it per your organization's business processes
  15. We recommend emailing a revised copy of the resume to the seeker directly and teaching them to upload it to Google Docs, Dropbox, or another cloud storage service
  16. Upload the resume under the seeker's profile in WorkSourceWA and prepare to ring the "I got hired!" bell :)
